Cost optimization integrated into engineering decisions. That’s better.

Share

Challenge

The customer’s product development environment involved multiple stakeholder groups across engineering, manufacturing, and service functions, each operating with different priorities, processes, and measures of success. Cost-related information and decision inputs were distributed across disparate systems and business functions, making it difficult to establish a unified view of cost drivers throughout the product lifecycle. In addition, the absence of a standardized Design-to-Cost methodology limited the organization’s ability to consistently evaluate cost impacts during engineering decisions while ensuring future scalability across digital transformation initiatives.

Solution

We conducted a Design-to-Cost assessment to define how cost considerations could be integrated into engineering decision-making across the organization. The program brought together business stakeholders, engineering teams, and digital transformation leaders to define requirements and evaluate future opportunities.

Our team conducted a detailed assessment of people, processes, technologies, and data associated with product development and cost optimization. This helped identify critical business stakeholders to understand how cost considerations could be incorporated into engineering decisions without impacting product performance or quality objectives.

Working closely with the customer, we investigated current and future-state capabilities related to Design-to-Cost, Manufacturing-to-Cost, and Service-to-Cost initiatives. The objective was to develop a holistic view of value creation opportunities across the product lifecycle while identifying key cost drivers and business dependencies.

In addition to defining stakeholder requirements, we evaluated broader considerations around solution scalability, data governance, security requirements, and digital thread alignment. This ensured that recommendations supported both immediate business objectives and long-term enterprise transformation goals.

The engagement also focused on assessing industrialization potential and validating the business case for future digital transformation initiatives. By establishing a clear understanding of organizational expectations, technology requirements, and expected benefits, Tata Technologies provided the customer with a detailed framework for integrating cost optimization into product development decisions while maintaining performance and quality objectives.
